The Frank Feighan "Irish" debate

Roscommon-South Leitrim TD and Fine Gael's Gaeltacht affairs spokesman Frank Feighan has been criticised by a group of Irish language enthusiasts for having "very limited Irish". The group collected signatures for an open letter to his party leader Enda Kenny, claiming that Mr Feighan could not communicate effectively with children in the Gaelscoileanna or articulate Fine Gael's policy on Raidio na Gaeltachta and TG4.
• Frank has plenty of "rusty" Irish. I have conversed with him "Trι Gaeilge". He freely admits that he is not a fluent speaker, and is currently undergoing a refresh course.
• Government ministers, TD's and senators are elected and appointed to perform administrative functions and lobby on behalf of the electorate. They are not necessarily practioners in any particular field.
• I believe that if Ministers are required to be practitioners in all aspects their particular brief, then Brian Lenihan (solicitor) would not be our finance minister. Ministerial health appointment would be denied to Mary Harney. An extension of the same mind-set would have prohibited DeValera from becoming Taoiseach since he wasn't even born in Ireland.
• Fine Gael's previous Gaeltacht affairs spokesman Michael Ring also spoke limited Irish and former Gaeltacht Affairs Minister Sνle de Valera was in a similar position.

Investment for Lough Key

Shannonside FM reports: Over half a million euro has been allocated for the construction of a new Marina at Lough Key in Boyle. The investment of €525,000 will result the creation of an additional 40 moorings with floating jetties and a new purpose-built Service Block. The current mooring space of 21 berths is insufficient for the demand. Waterways Ireland says around 8,000 boats enter the Lough each year.

Trees and Flowers adorn Main Street

Many thanks to Laura Egan, Ardcarne Garden Centre, Roscommon Co Council Engineering and the team who worked in organising Trees and Baskets to adorn Main Street. Well done to Laura who is very involved with the Better Boyle Initiative and who has worked tirelessly with all involved to ensure the benefit would be felt before the opening of the Arts Festival. Main Street Streetscape Project

Thanks to Laura Egan, the Better Boyle initiative, our local Co. Engineer, families and businesses in Main Street, a landscaping pilot programme will commence this week. Hanging baskets will be erected on the ESB poles in Main Street which will hopefully enhance and mirror the wonderful efforts made by Sloan's, McGee's and Harrington's.
• Our very own Ardcarne Garden Centre will aid by loaning seven trees which will be planted in tubs from Canaria all the way to Mattimoes. This is a pilot proposal to give people an opportunity to experience the visual impact of street landscaping. By placing the trees in tubs the layout can be altered as deemed necessary. Your feedback on the scheme will be very welcome.
